    Subject: The two-year deadline has passed, please protect SA’s greyhounds

    Dear [MP’s name],

    I am writing as a resident of [suburb/electorate] to ask you to support a managed phase-out of greyhound racing in South Australia.

    In December 2023, the greyhound racing industry was given two years to prove it could improve animal welfare and protect the dogs bred for racing. That deadline has now passed, but greyhounds are still being injured and killed.

    The evidence is deeply concerning:

    • 453 greyhounds were injured and eight died following catastrophic race or trial injuries in South Australia during the first six months of 2026.

    • South Australia is recording around twice as many greyhound injuries as New Zealand, which is phasing out racing because deaths and injuries remained unacceptably high.

    • Around four in ten greyhound puppies bred for racing never make it to the racetrack, while most racing dogs retire between just two and five years old.

    • There are not enough safe homes for every dog the industry continues to breed and later rejects.

    • Only an estimated 6% of industry participants rely on greyhound racing as their primary income.

    • South Australia’s greyhound racing industry is not subject to Freedom of Information laws in the same way as many public bodies, limiting transparency and public scrutiny.

    South Australians have also made their expectations clear. A February 2026 YouGov survey found:

    • 77% believe racing should end if greyhounds cannot be guaranteed good welfare from birth to death

    • only 16% believe racing provides greyhounds with acceptable welfare

    • 66% support a funded transition plan

    • 62% oppose government funding for the industry.

    In the past year, 90% of South Australians did not attend or bet on greyhound racing, while wagering revenue from South Australian races declined by 14%.

    If reform had worked, fewer dogs would be suffering. Instead, injuries and deaths continue, dogs remain difficult to trace throughout their lives, and the industry continues to produce more greyhounds than it can safely rehome.

    I am asking you to:

    • acknowledge that reform has failed to make greyhound racing safe

    • publicly support a managed phase-out of greyhound racing in South Australia

    • advocate directly to Racing Minister Rhiannon Pearce and Premier Peter Malinauskas

    • support a funded transition plan that protects every affected greyhound and assists workers and communities

    • ensure independent oversight, strong enforcement and full tracking of every greyhound from birth to death throughout the transition.

    Please provide a direct response confirming whether you support a managed phase-out and what action you will take to protect South Australia’s greyhounds.
